The Advantages of Taking Piano Lessons?

When I was a child, my Aunt played the piano at family events…mostly at Christmas. She would play the piano and we would all gather around her and sing those familiar Christmas songs until her fingers got tired.

It was then, when I was that age, that I had a desire to take piano lessons so I could hear the music being played anytime I wanted to, not just at holidays or special events. She was able to play with such ease and she had fun doing it.

An experienced piano player has a knack for getting the most from a piano. When they are playing they tend to get involved in the music its self and the end result is a magnificent sound that stays in the air for a long time. I guess that would be a great memory.

Actually I know several people who play the piano. Some of them have learned to play by ear, meaning they hear a song a few times and a short time later, they begin to play that same song. After a while they become good at playing that song and it becomes part of their repertoire.

Playing by ear does have its disadvantages though.

**Your time learning a tune is slower. That’s because a person who has taken piano lessons has been taught to read notes from a musical score or script and is able to play most any song within their experience.

**You become “locked” into what you have taught yourself. This is a great disadvantage because once that song has been learned one way, it’s sometimes very difficult to dismiss all your time just so you can learn it all over again the right way.

**You limit what you can play. Without proper piano lessons, you become stagnant in your learning. This is a terrible thing to happen because now, you begin to repeat only the songs you know and after a while, that becomes boring and soon the excitement of playing the piano goes away.

While there are many people who can play by ear, and are great at doing that, the vast majority will become entangled in the description above and most likely lose their enthusiasm altogether.

TIP: If you’re going to play the piano…find a piano teacher and take piano lessons. The money spent for this knowledge will not be remembered but the inability to play like you imagined you could, will be remembered for a long time to come.

Finally, taking piano lessons is not that difficult, nor expensive. The benefits far out way the hours of practice and the dedication to this fine art will be enjoyed far into your life time and those around you.
